Rarely do I plan my dance parties more than two weeks in advance, but the Electric Zoo Festival in NYC on September 5 -6 requires some planning. And some training. With this gigantic event only 2 months away, it’s time to get it on my radar.
The Electric Zoo is a monster outdoor electronic festival occurring on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th with the hours running from 12 noon – 11 pm each day. According to the Zoo website, the festival will host over 50 artists on 4 stages. The outdoor event is occurring on a vast expanse of Randall’s island, a patch of land between Manhattan and Queens.
Anybody with even a passing interest in electronic music will recognize some of the DJ names: Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta, Deadmau5, Hot Chip, etc. From the music message boards, there is a great deal of buzz about the events.
People generally go because of an allegiance to a few specific DJs/producers. For me, I want to go see the mob of techno and minimal artists such as Audion (Matthew Dear), Marco Carola, Seth Troxler, and Richie Hawtin. And artists that a mind bendingly awesome such as James Holden and Nathan Fake. Or danceable and adorable like Guy Gerber.
For people unfamiliar with electronic music, I suggest checking out Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music. You may find fault with Ishkur’s acid opinions, but he is right– so much suckage in electronic music. With his machete sharp words, he chops away at the dreck to reveal to the pure bliss that comes with getting lost in a good track.
How does one prep for 22 hours of daytime festival + multiple post-midnight afterparties without the use of illegal substances? Taking a page from dancers at the week-long Winter Music Conference, I suppose I will drown myself in Diet Coke and energy drinks. Also, I plan to take up running and engage in clean living starting…now. From what I hear, banking sleep is possible or perhaps I’ll need to catch up later.
